20 random things about me

I saw this tag hanging around somewhere in the blogosphere. But I couldn’t wait for someone to tag me with this topic. I like to brag, you see!
So here goes. Majority of it was already written in my Hi5 journal.

  1. People used to call me Debug (If you still haven’t noticed, it sounds like my original name)at Infosys, because of my debugging skills.
  2. I am a exceptionally good (or is it “bad”?) poor joker. People used to go haywire just by hearing some of my jokes.
  3. The first recorded instance of me cracking a PJ dates way back when I was in 3rd std. (My mom told me that. And I’m not kidding this time) It cannot be translated to English unfortunately, because it’s base is a pun in Malayalam language.
  4. EYES: Black. “Ooh Ooh Aah Aah Pretty eyes”
  5. HAIR: Jet Black. A bit difficult to tame. (Just like Harry Potter)
  6. FOOD: Anything that’s vegetarian and good!! I’m addicted to junk food, especially Lays and Snickers. A specific “normal” food I like is the traditional South Indian Iyer lunch. LOL.
  7. POST FOOD: Sleep, what else?
  8. FOR FOOD: I usually don’t eat outside food except for lunch. (Plus junk food, of course) Because I’m a good cook. “Good” isn’t enough. I’m an excellent cook. I cook @ home.
  9. AM I A WIERDO? People say so, but I don’t agree.
  10. DO I HAVE ANY PIERCINGS? Ears, although I didn’t authorize that! We have this curious custom of piercing the ears of the first baby boy.
  11. DO I PLAY IN A BAND OR PLAY AN INSTRUMENT? : I play the Violin. I have a National Scholarship for it. And I was in the college music troupe.
  12. I think scary movies are funny!
  13. WHAT AM I NOT AFRAID OF THAT MOST PEOPLE ARE AFRAID OF? Snakes. (BTW, did you understand that question in one go?)
  14. I am afraid of keeping pets. This is after my cat, Tinku, was hit by an autorickshaw and died.
  15. My favorite activity with a PC is tinkering with its hardware. I have done everything I know of with my old PC and still haven’t managed to blow it up. =)
  16. My second favorite activity with a PC is programming. I recall several instances of skipping dinner because I was busy programming in my PC.
  17. I love reading. Books are like a part of my life. I collect books. I like fantasy books. I buy an average of 2 novels per month. And I reread some of the books I like.
  18. I generally don’t lend books to people out of fear that they will rip, tear, shred, bend, fold, deface, disfigure, smear, smudge, throw, drop, or in any other manner damage, mistreat, or show lack of respect towards my books.
  19. WHAT ARE MY MOST REPEATED WORDS? It’s good. It’s Gooooooood! (Like Jim Carrey says in Bruce Almighty)
  20. I love sniper rifles both in games and real life. I’ve seen Enemy at the Gates several times over just because it’s the story of two of the best snipers WW-II has seen. And my favorite weapon in computer games is without doubt, a sniper rifle.

    Interested in Sniping?

Vasili Zaietsev was not the best sniper in WW II by a longshot.
The story of Enemy at the gates is fiction and its veracity is debated.

Simo Häyhä was a Finnish soldier, and is widely considered to be the most successful sniper in history.
During the Winter War (1939–1940) between Finland and the Soviet Union, he began his duty as a sniper against the Red Army. Working in temperatures between -20 to -40 Celsius, and dressed completely in a white camouflage suit, Häyhä killed at least 505 Red Army soldiers by sniping them one by one.

He did this using iron sights, not telescopic sights because it presented a smaller target (less probability of detection).

All Häyhä’s kills were accomplished within three months, prior to his injuries caused by an exploding enemy bullet. Other snipers who have come even close to Häyhä’s record have accumulated their kills over a much longer time frame.

Zaitsev was a good sniper, but he was propogandized.

If you are interested in long range sniping, read up on Sgt. Carlos Hathcock of the US Marines. He had 93 confirmed kills in Vietnam. The Vietcong placed a $300,000 prize on his head.

He once held up a battalion of Vietcong single handedly and eliminated them one by one over the course of a night.

And till the US war in Afghanistan post 9/11, he held the record for the largest distance for a recorded kill. It was something like 2000+ metres.

    I know, I know.
Zaitsev was overhyped. But I liked the movie. And both the snipers - Zaetsev and Konig.

But in real life, it is still debated that the person sent to dispatch of Zaetsev was Konig or whether he existed at all!!

Anyway Zaetsev is not among my personal favorites. My favorite is Hathcock. And fictional favorite is the Jackal of “Day of the Jackal”

” So what’s wrong in having a favorite sniper? He’s so talented that I respect him.”

Difference is he kills people for a living. You can respect him, but don’t call him your favourite because that implies you like people being killed.
I’ve spoken to an officer in the army who used to be a sniper. People like him won’t ask for any acknowledgement or medals. They’re the quiet professionals - go out and do your job, come home, have a cup of tea.

“Difference is he kills people for a living.”

Correction: He kills enemies. He doesn’t do it for a living. He does it for a cause - whether the cause is right or wrong is another topic.

I admit “Favorite” is not a good word to attribute to real world snipers. Of course, I don’t like people being killed. But I cannot but feel awed at how the fictional snipers work - How the jackal shoots a moving target. I’ve even heard about a lady sniper shooting a cigarette butt from 400 meters.
